What is Nintendo?

     Where it all began

For a quick little history lesson, Nintendo is a renowned Japanese multinational consumer electronics and video game company headquartered in Kyoto, Japan. It was founded on by Fusajiro Yamauchi, initially as a playing card company called Nintendo Koppai. The company would later venture into various business areas, such as the toy industry, before finding its niche in the video game industry that it still holds today.

Nintendo has always been a gaming industry pioneer. They pioneered some memorable and revolutionary gaming systems, characters, and franchises that have had a lasting effect on popular culture. Some of their most renowned properties span multiple decades, including Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, and many more.

    Nintendo Today

In the current day, Nintendo is still a massive player in the gaming industry. They are considered one of the big three companies in the gaming console market, the other two being Sony, and Microsoft. According to their company website, Nintendo currently "aims to deliver unique, intuitive entertainment experiences for everyone". And their mission is to, "put smiles on the faces of everyone we touch".

Basically, they are aiming to leave an impact on everyone that plays or experiences their products, and they aim to make their products as unique and innovative as they can. As a Nintendo fan myself, I can certainly back up their claim, non-bias aside, it seems every console they develop they do try to put a new innovative spin on it. For example, how their current home console, the Nintendo Switch is the first time they ever developed a hybrid home, and portable gaming console. One that aims to appeal to all markets, with the target market in particular being "people between the ages of 12-30". They recently have dabbled into other projects such as opening a theme park section in Universal Studios, as well as currently building their own Nintendo Musuem set to open soon in, Kyoto Japan. They also still sell toys such as merchandise for their current intellectual properties.

The present and future of Nintendo definitely seems bright, but the company is known to slip in and out of financial success, so only time can tell where the company will go from here.

  1. Nintendo has always been known for portable consoles, like the Nintendo DS, the GameBoy, and the Nintendo Switch. While other console companies never came out with many portable consoles. Sony came out with the PlayStation Portable (PSP), but they didn't stick with it. Why do you think other gaming companies don't try to compete with Nintendo and create new portable consoles?

    1. To answer this in the simplest way I can is that other companies knew it was a market that wasn't worth the risk. Basically they knew competition would be very tough so played it safe by not entering the market.
